What is Focusing?
The Art of Deep Inner Listening
Focusing is the art of deep inner listening — a gentle yet powerful practice that taps into the body's native intelligence.
Discovered by philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlin in the 1950s, Focusing emerged from groundbreaking research conducted alongside Carl Rogers. Studying hundreds of recorded therapy sessions, Gendlin identified a crucial insight: those who benefited most from therapy shared a common ability — they could connect with a subtle bodily phenomenon he called the Felt Sense.
The Felt Sense
The Felt Sense is a dynamic, embodied awareness that arises in response to life's challenges and experiences. It is subtle yet vastly nuanced — a holistic knowing that holds far more intelligence than the thinking mind alone can access.
It cannot be grasped or forced. It must be listened for.
When we learn to turn toward the Felt Sense with patience and curiosity, something shifts. New perspectives open. Stuck places begin to move. The body reveals what the mind has been circling around for years.
What Focusing offers
Through this practice you may find:
A deeper, more trustworthy relationship with your body and its wisdom
Fresh perspectives on the places where you feel most stuck
Clarity about steps toward healing and growth
Access to dimensions of yourself that thinking alone cannot reach
Working with Focusing
Focusing is not a technique imposed from outside. It is a capacity you already carry — one that most of us have simply forgotten how to use.
My role as a Focusing-oriented therapist is not to interpret your experience or lead you somewhere I think you should go. It is to help you slow down, turn inward, and relearn the art of listening to yourself.
This is quiet, patient, often surprising work. And it is always yours.

How does Somatic Focusing work?
We begin by slowing down. By pausing.
This simple act opens a fertile inner space — and it is into this space that the Felt Sense slowly takes form, offering a doorway into something life-changing.
Meeting our inner parts
The approach I work with — Inner Relationship Focusing — invites us to meet the family of inner parts that live within us. Often these are the parts that carry wounds from childhood: grief, abandonment, rejection, anger, shame, or hurt. And the inner critics who have spent years trying to keep us small and safe.
By turning toward these parts with curiosity and compassion, we can slowly tend, hear, and begin to heal them. Offering them the unconditional listening they never received.
In this way, Focusing becomes a practice of self-reparenting — calling home the lost, orphaned, and disavowed ones back into the family of wholeness.
The ground beneath the wound
Focusing can also open us into the unbroken terrain that lies prior to our wounds; deep inner resources of the psyche and soul that we can tap in our journey towards wholeness.
From these deep reservoirs, naturally healing states can arise spontaneously — not manufactured or summoned, but emerging from a vast intelligence that is prior to our suffering, prior to our stories, prior to our labels and deficiency narratives.
Deep peace. Boundless compassion. Dynamic strength. These are not destinations we travel toward — they arise from within, meeting us exactly where we are, offering a medicine exquisitely tailored to the moment.
Focusing is a doorway into this immense treasury — a tool for life, capable of metabolising our wounds, and connecting us to the deep truth that lives beyond them.

Somatic Focusing sessions are 1hr in duration and are unlike most types of traditional talk therapy in that we are almost entirely guided by your body and the process unfolding within it. People often find Focusing enormously restful and nourishing, even when difficult experiences are touched into. This is because Focusing cultivates deep presence and self awareness and leverages polyvagal tools to help you regulate your nervous system. Book a 1:1 Focusing session with me here
What to expect in a Focusing Session
Meet your teacher
I am a certified teacher of Focusing, accredited with the International Focusing Institute. This intensive 2 year training - grounded in contemporary polyvagal theory - was deeply experiential and profoundly shifted the relationship I had with my body and the family of inner parts it housed.
Like many, I once lived ‘from the neck up’, quarantined from my body and the kaleidoscope of stored wounds that it held. But Focusing was part of a seismic shift in the relationship I had with myself and it gifted me the gentle capacity to turn inwards and towards my suffering, rather than outward on a search to transcend or escape. It taught me how to walk through the doorway of direct experience in a profound process of healing, growth and discovery.
I am passionate about helping others unlock the wisdom that lives within them and would be honoured to pay forward the gift of Focusing.
